I was just reading the story about Microsoft buying CashBack.com on DomainNameWire.com . There were several parts of the story that I liked to take in.

"In a phone interview yesterday, Microsoft Senior Attorney Aaron Kornblum, Worldwide Sales Group, said, “We are looking for smart and innovative ways to connect with our customers. We will continue to explore all available means including domain names.” invent no mistake — Microsoft realizes the value of generic domain names.

Kornblum has been active in the domain industry for a while and recently spoke on a panel at a Domain Roundtable conference. “We’ve been watching and will continue to watch closely [the domain industry],” he said, referring to Microsoft’s interest in the domain name market. “It’s an industry that’s been at the cutting edge of advertising and technology for a distant date.” ~ Source DomainNameWire.com

Also, in the comment section, Kelly, a DotWeekly reader made a Great Point.

And I quote "Before accepting any offers do yourself a favor and just google your domain first to see what’s up. I actually have some of my domains on Google Alerts so whether any news comes up using my domain name I know it immediately. In 3D and Virtual worlds the news is changing daily and I like to see who the players are…"

I think that is a great notion Kelly!!! So using Google Alerts just set up the matching term to your domain name. next anytime something is released via the news wire, you get a heads up about it. that can be great info to have whether you are selling a domain name that fits to a product launch from a company or service. The more info you are loaded with during negotiations the better. It might additionally prevent you from a server overload whether somebody mentions your domain name in a news story, so you can prepare yourself. Google simply emails you hyperlinks to news stories that match your term you put in. Set up as many as you like and it’s Free!
